Celebrating World Book Day
Thursday 6th March was World Book Day. To celebrate, each child in the Prep was invited to dress up as a character from their favourite story. We had some really interesting costumes showcasing characters from novels old and new. One child from each class was chosen whose costume seemed particularly creative or well thought out. Deciding who to chose was a very tough job for our judges. Congratulations to each of our winners who received a £5 book token to help encourage a love of reading.
Supporting Sport Relief
On Friday 21st March the Prep donned tracksuits in support of Sport Relief. Each class participated in a series of sports activities in the assembly hall ranging from bouncing the ball on some 'splats', to navigating balls around cones using hockey sticks, and trying to score against the goalie. The teachers also showed their sporty side by taking part in a Teacher's Timed trial. One pupil from each class received a medal for outstanding effort and showing great sportsmanship.
Rugby at Ravenhill
The Prep rugby team were invited to play in the East Down Mini-Rugby Blitz at Ravenhill on Friday 9th May. Teams from across Northern Ireland played at the hallowed grounds getting a taste of what a professional rugby player's experience is like.
Carrying the Commonwealth Torch
Two Prep 7 pupils were selected to carry the Commonwealth Torch for part of its journey up to Scrabo Tower as part of the festivities leading up to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this summer. Before receiving the torch, there was an opportunity to hear from some local athletes from the Borough hoping to represent Northern Ireland in swimming, gymnastics and netball. They spoke about their training, personal goals and what it meant to them to take part in such a large event.
The NSPCC Big Workout
On Wednesday 14th May, the Prep took part in a keep fit challenge to raise funds for the work of the NSPCC. Every class completed an obstacle course whilst thinking about boys and girls in difficult situations who may need the help of the NSPCC. The classes had 5 minutes to see how many pupils could complete the full course. It was a tight race but in joint third place we had Prep 2 and Prep 5 who each managed to complete the course 30 times; in second place were Prep 6 who completed it 41 times; and in first place were the sporty Prep 7 class who completed the course 46 times. Joanne from the NSPCC returned to school on Thursday 22nd May to reveal the total money raised through this event and to hand out badges to everyone who was sponsored. We raised an amazing £2218.89 which will enable the NSPCC to help 555 children - fantastic! Thank you to everyone who took part in the day or who sponsored someone who did.
